Bill Nelson is a New York-based lyricist, bookwriter and playwright. He received an M.F.A. from the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program where he wrote, with composer Daniel Lincoln, Savannah: A Musical Fable, which received a First Look reading in 2009. A revue of Bill's songs, Bill Nelson's All-Male Revue, produced and directed by William Finn, debuted at Barrington Stages in 2009 and returned in 2010. Bill is currently developing a new musical with composer Anna K. Jacobs about a gay men’s vocal group in rural Kansas called Harmony, Kansas. It will receive its first production in June, 2012 at the Diversionary Theatre in San Diego.
Bill's plays have been produced around the country and his songs have been heard at cabarets around the world, including William Finn's Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don't Know But Should presented at both Joe's Pub and Barrington Stage Company.
Originally from the Midwest, Bill co-founded and ran Burning Moon Productions, a Kansas City theatre group dedicated to staging works about gay men and women. Among the shows he's written under this umbrella are Tales from Gaydom and Mishappenance. For Imagination Studio he wrote the serial, Welcome to Paradise. He's also penned scripts for productions by the Heartland Men's Chorus. He is a published playwright and lyricist.
